Assignment Breifs (Press and Editorial Photography)

Assignment brief - 1 (week 1)

BA (Hons) PRESS & EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

The Brief: “Welcome to Falmouth” - Your first impressions of Falifornia.

In the past 15 years digital has become a prominent medium in all areas of photographic practice. Today's professionals need to be proficient in both analogue and digital workflows and so this project will be digital only.

Constraints, Materials and Presentation:

This project will be shot using a digital camera, anything from an iPhone to the latest DSLR and will be displayed as part of the trip on Friday. You will be expected to bring the image along to the Ferryboat Inn where we will be having lunch after the walk. The image must be 10”x8” and be physical, not digital. Find Craig at Print Services in the Photography Centre to get your photograph printed. Take into consideration the time frame, and how long it will take to have the image printed and ready for Friday morning.
Craig can make prints on a same day turnaround if submitted before 3pm

In terms of post-production editing, basic colour correction, grading and manipulation of contrast etc. are encouraged as part of a standard digital workflow in your editing software of choice but no manipulation of image content is permitted aside from cloning for dust removal purposes.

This is not assessed work, it’s to get you out and around Falmouth and start capturing some creative and compelling photographs. After lunch on Friday each image will be spread out and discussed. Be ready to talk about why you took the shot and why you chose it!

Work Required for Presentation:

You will be required to produce at least one image that defines your first impressions of Falmouth - positive or otherwise! It's fair to say that this is open to any number of interpretations so feel free to get creative and focus on a more personal element of the town, it doesn't have to be some all encompassing image.

Short captions (no longer than a hundred words) are permitted if you feel they add to the back-story of the image and should be put on the back of the 10”x8” if necessary.

Final Deadline:

Images must be ready to bring along to the walk on Friday 19th September.

If you have any problems, post to the Facebook group or contact one of the mentors.

Outcome -

This was my chosen image for print (colour version).

As i live close enough to Falmouth and in the past made many visits to the area, the "1st impressions" aspect of the assignment challenged me to look at Falmouth from a different perspective. I noticed there were lots of quirky shops and little restaurants that appeared quite intimate. I had never seen this specific one before and i was intrigued with its size, shape and colour. It had also started to rain softly which left a smear on the lens i was using, i was really happy with the way this framed the image which added a mysterious mood to the picture, which was exactly how i felt about it when looking at it personally.
